From the Coventry Carol Lully lulla in its original mediaeval dramatic setting to Australian and English carols old and new – this concert sparkles with the season’s joy at a newborn child while reflecting on the more sombre realities of the Christmas story.
The final tour of The Song Company’s 2017 season The Attraction of Opposites gets us into a jolly mood for the festive season, but with a twist that is right there in the middle of the Christmas story. “Lully lulla” is the refrain of the well-known Coventry Carol which is one of the songs transcribed, arranged (or possibly newly composed) by Thomas Mawdycke in 1591 from the mediaeval mystery play – the Shearmen and Tailors’ Pageant – and is justly famous for its chillingly evocative tale of Herod’s jealous rage set against a bittersweet lullaby sung by three mothers. We sing Lully Lulla in its original mediaeval dramatic setting, surrounded by Australian and English carols old and new that reflect both the joy and the sorrow of the season. Underneath two thousand years of traditional embellishment and commercial accretion there is a timely reminder of today’s realities of exile, refugee status, and the ‘Slaughter of the innocents’. Also woven into our retelling of the story are newer and more upbeat settings of Christmas texts, both sacred and profane, with their “tidings of comfort and joy”: a selection from The Song Company’s perennial Call for Scores including a number of a cappella rounds from Foweles in the Frith and The King of Blis by Brian Kogler. And there’s a Gloria in excelsis from the first part of the 15th century with scintillating syncopations and happy harmonies that could have been written yesterday. It’s certainly beginning to sound a lot like Christmas!
